Henry Phipps, a steel magnate and associate of Andrew Carnegie, provided funds for the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic. Built on the grounds of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, rather than in an isolated asylum far from mainstream medicine, the Phipps Clinic set new standards for the care and study of mental diseases and disorders.
