“Diamond Jim” Brady was an early grateful patient who recognized the need for skilled physicians and their patients to have adequate facilities. He made a gift to The Johns Hopkins Hospital to build and equip The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute, pledged an annual sum to cover operating expenses, and left the Institute a bequest to continue its work. This groundbreaking Institute, the first of its kind in North America, placed patient care, laboratory research and teaching under one roof. It began a tradition of discovery that continues to this day.
